Birds of Prey and Batgirl review

I thought I’d try to get this place back in business after a long hiatus with a few reviews, last week Birds of Prey and Batgirl came out so I thought I’d take a look at both titles. First let’s take a look at Birds of Prey issue 3, our favorite gals were in heap of trouble last issue with Barbara swearing to fight back with the bold declaration “I AM THE GRID!” Was she able to live up to her words? Let’s find out.

Birds of Prey 2 review

I thought I would try to stretch out what little I think is worth reviewing so I’ll just talk Birds of Prey today. Someone is really out to get Barbara and company and seems to know everything thing about them. Black Canary’s secret identity has been outed along with the secret location of her adopted daughter Sin. Dinah attempts to engage the mysterious White Canary in combat and concludes she is not Shiva like I thought. Whoever this is hates Black Canary and is showing that emotion that Shiva never does according to Dinah when fighting. So if she isn’t Shiva who is she? Some are speculating that it is an adult Sin who has come back in time with a grudge against the would-be mother who abandoned her. I thought time travel seemed unlikely for this book but then I remembered that the Geoff Johns’ next event Flash Point is time travel related. Could this be the seed of a future company wide crossover starting? I don’t know but it certainly has my interest.

The Birds are back in town!

What a glorious day! One might even say the Brightest Day! My favorite title came in this week for the first time in a long. What a minute Mike, Justice League didn’t coming this week. No it didn’t, but it is possible to have two favorite titles. While you may argue that a choice must be made, I simply can’t do it. I can’t pick between Birds of Prey and Justice League of America. It’s like trying to pick between Buffy and Star Trek. Both are great in different ways. There is no bad choice. Best of all Gail Simone is back in charge of Barbara Gordon and is rounding up the rest of ladies to kick ass and take names once again. No more Bitchy Barbara! No more whiny indecisive Barbara! The real deal is back and it’s about time. The added bonus is Ed Benes is back on the title and delivers some great artwork. Nobody draws Black Canary better than him. When I think of the modern Canary I think of his work. Now I know Geoff Johns twisted Gail’s arm to get her back on this title and am I glad he did. Perhaps they could put “based on an idea by Geoff Johns” across the top of each issue you know sort of like when Grant Morrison invented Metal Men. Remember that nonsense? I am kidding about the Johns thing but anything to keep this title a float. Enough tweeting about Birds let’s get to the review and do I really need to tell you that this is Analog’s pick of the week?

Batgirl #6 review (Spoilers)

This issue of Batgirl seemed more like an old issue of Batman Family (yes, Mr. Analog is old and dating himself) as everyone in the Batman universe stopped by more a visit. While Stephanie definitely had her moments in this issue, she was almost squeezed out of her own book by all of the cameos. I was thinking I might drop this book with the announcement of the Bird of Prey return, but Bryan Q Miller kept me interested with a great choice of villain. Stephanie is still being portrayed as screw-up, and I really wish they’d let her succeed at something by herself. She does at least get in a few digs at the obnoxious new Robin. So warm up the Bat signal for some spoilers and let’s head to Gotham.

Batgirl #5 review (Spoilers)

I hadn’t really planned to review Batgirl #5, since I had been so hard on the title in the last review. I’ll admit that I was maybe too hard on it because it wasn’t what I really wanted. However, the latest issue arrived with Barbara and Stephanie seeming to settle into their roles. In fact, I believe that this issue was a major step in the right direction. So let’s see where the former SPOILER and her new boss are this issue. See how clever I was there? Not really? Okay clink the link already.

Batgirl Showcase Review

We’re starting a feature here called Way Back Wednesday on Analog. We’ll go back and look at an older comic (bet it will be Justice League a lot) or at compilations. First up is the DC Showcase Presents Batgirl TP Vol 1. Why this one? Well, we just plain love Barbara Gordon. Can’t live with out her. So Mr Peobody and his boy Sherman have the WABAC machine warmed up, let’s hop in. But first we'll say SPOILER, because we talk about what happens in this Showcase.
