Co Pick of week- Cry for Justice
Friday, March 5, 2010 at 11:11AM
It was a light week at the comic book shop being the first of the month but at least three books packed a punch, we’ve discussed Buffy already, and I must mention Milestone Forever eventually but Cry for Justice had quite a shocking ending. Again this ending is so big, I’m going to wait a week to let everyone read it so it is not spoiled but I’m going to talk about most of the book here. It gets my co-pick of the week for Analog because there is no choosing between Buffy and my love of JLA. They are both great. We’ll talk about everything up to that last three page of Cry of Justice but that is. Spoilers ahead and we’ll talk ending next week when I talk about fallout from this series.
When we left our heroes last issue, they were in deep trouble as Prometheus had build multiple machines using various stolen components like the cosmic treadmill capable of transporting entire cities to unknown locations to be lost forever. Since Green Arrow had decided to mouth off to the baddie, Star City had become the first target of Prometheus scheme. We pick up with him taunting Green Arrow that there is nothing they can do to stop the destruction of Star City. The clock is ticking on every DC city we’ve ever seen, so the heroes teleport into action leaving the Atom and Vixen to stand guard over the maniac. At Star City, Speedy (the Mia version) is fighting off the villain that planted the device for Prometheus; the Electrocutioner who brags everyone will know his name now. As Star City crumbles around her Donna and Kory arrive to help but Speedy has realized she has made a giant error that the entire Green Arrow family will have to live with forever. If you thought Roy losing an arm was bad, this is worse. I won’t say what happened, but it is a shocker.
The heroes have realized that the cities are being destroyed not teleported as threatened. Back to Prometheus, the Atom begs for the villain to give them the codes to shut down the machines. Prometheus won’t deal, he admits that his machines are failing to work the way they are supposed to but it doesn’t matter to him. Cities are being destroyed and he gets his vengeance on the heroes either way. As the heroes are desperate on what to do, Green Arrow focuses them on “saving the living.” Hal disagrees and swears not to lose a city again but Canary reminds him this isn’t just Coast City. It’s every city where the heroes operate and they have no idea how many cities are in peril. We get an update on that as the Flashes Jay and Wally try to save the twin cities of Keystone and Central City from an underwater device that they can’t get to.
Prometheus tells them he has prepared for their various powers and specialties and there is no way to stop him with out the codes. That’s right, each device has it own special code. Suddenly Miss Martian appears in the transporter to Vixen’s surprise. The Atom had thought if only we had J’onn to read his mind but then remembered they still had a Martian on earth. Miss Martian tries to read Prometheus’ mind for the codes but he has prepared for mind reading and causes a feedback that knocks her unconscious. Don’t insult him he says, he has prepared for everything. Central City, St. Roch, Opal City all in peril as the heroes search in vain for ideas. No one has one until at Fawcett city; the Bulleteer breaks into the JLA frequency and says she might have one. Vixen wonders how she got this frequency but Bulleteer reminds her she was in the JLA for a cup of coffee during 52. She has found the real Freddie Freeman who has been tied up in his human form and had his mouth sewn shut so he cannot speak his magic words.
The freed Freddie speaks the magic word of Shazam and tries to use the speed of Mercury and the magical lightning to disable each machine but it is no good, Prometheus has prepared for magic too. It decision time folks, the heroes are out of options, it is either watch their cities be destroyed or let Prometheus escape. We get a splash page of all the heroes chiming in their opinion on what to do that ends with Green Arrow. The person who has lost the most speaks loudly; they must save the living, there is nothing they can do for Star City and the lives lost there. He hates every word of his speech but he is right they have no choice. Prometheus is freed in exchange for the codes and Vixen gets to transport him away despite her objection. Star City is in ruins and may never recover but the rest of the cities are saved with some damage.
This is not the end of the story but it is all I will talk about that next week to give folks time to get this book, the heroes have had to make the toughest decision of their lives and it has pushed one of them to his breaking point. The last two panels are shocking and will have major fallout in the related books to the coming up the Rise and Fall of the Justice League. If you are a league fan this is a big a game changer as Identity Crisis, we saw how the heroes dealt with Zatanna’s actions and those who sided with her and it torn the League apart. Now how will they deal with this? Only time will tell.
