Wrestlemania disappointment

No review on Amazing race today, I was foolish enough to plunk down my money for Wrestlemania 26 and boy do wish I had stuck with the Amazing Race. This year’s Wrestlemania had one good match in four hours and that’s pretty poor. If they can’t come up with a better card than this next year, I’m saving my money and skipping it. I’m not going to go in depth on the match but will make some general comment on each and I don’t really have anything positive to say about much of it.

The opening match was the tag team championship and I don’t even know why they bothered to broadcast this one. This could have been a dark match and I wouldn’t have missed it. This just highlights the sorry state WWE has let the tag team section of their product become. They now have to fabricate teams to fight each other. The current champs are waste of space Big Show and Miz who are frankly boring together. Since they needed an opponent they threw R Truth and John Morrison together and tried to convince us they were formidable tag team. Didn’t work, I like both R truth and Morrison but as a tag team it was pure fabrication, they just don’t work together and would have rather seen both in the money in the bank match which is better suited to them since both are high flyers. The announcers tell us the tag titles haven’t changes hands at Wrestlemania in 9 years and they don’t hear either with Show Miz (stupid name) getting the victory. The Hardy Boys vs. Edge and Christian this is not.

Next up is Orton vs. Legacy. Wow, Orton headlined the main event last year, and he is this early in the show? I was interested in this match and thought Ted Dibaise Jr. might get the call since I hear Vince loves him but nope. Orton wins when both Cody Rhodes and Ted turn on each other. Predictable. It was amusing to her people cheering Randy Orton. I personally love Randy since he is from St Louis even though he is a jerk in real life and plays that character too but the crowd was solidly behind him. Weird since his character hasn’t changed a bit. Guess Ted isn’t as high on Vince’s list as I thought.

It’s time for money in the bank. I thought maybe Christian might get a break and win this but I guess Vince still isn’t sold on him being a main eventer. In fact I don’t think Vince like him at all, I however love him on the mic and really want to see him get an actual title run and a feud with Edge. Cashing in the money in the bank to rob Edge of his title would be perfect way to kick it off. But nobody has any vision in WWE, I thought perhaps Matt Hardy might get the call when it seemed he and Christian were fighting on the ladder late in the match but no go here either. Now that the ECW championship has been scrapped it seems neither will be wearing gold anything soon. Speaking of Gold, how would you like to be the Gold Standard Sheldon Benjamin? A ten year vet of WWE and in his 5th Money in the bank match and will apparently never get the call not even for the ECW title. I’d be tempted to hang it up if were him, he must really love the sport because it’s obvious he’s going nowhere in the WWE. Then we get to our winner Jack Swagger. What has he done lately beside lose matches; he even lost to Santino to which I laughed my ass off at. I’m assuming he will cash it in at the most inopportune time to screw Cena maybe as soon as extreme rules where I can see a bloodied Cena beating Batista again and then getting screwed by the Money in bank automatic title shot. Swagger looks like a prospect but has no mic skills unless you count saying All American American seven times in a row as mic skills. His reign will be short and forgettable.

Speaking of Forgettable up next is Shamus vs. HHH. Shamus has been a paper champion and got crushed like one by HHH. It was a decent match but there is no way HHH was losing to this clown. I will say Shamus has better mic skills than Swagger but he is just about as boring. The WWE monster characters never work for me, and he fits the Kane mold of we have a big guy and we don’t know what to do with him. Why is HHH this early in the show? He was in main event last year also.

Here’s another totally fabricated match CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio. If Rey loses he must join the Straight Edge Society. I was tired of Punk awhile ago but the new Straight Edge Society angle with the shaved head Serena ringside at least gives me some eye candy during Punk’s long winded speech about he is hear to save us. CM has sold me on the bad guy routine finally but this match with Mysterio was a waste of time. Good beats evil of course, and Rey comes out on top despite looking like a fool dressed in an Avatar inspired mask and outfit.

Bret Hart vs. McMahon, the match that was 12 years in the making. I was really surprised that Vince didn’t blade himself to sell the beat down he got from Hart. That was the least he could do but he did get out there and let the whole Hart family kick the crap out of him for 10 or 15 minutes so that’s something. I wasn’t watching WWE during this era so Bret hart never really resonates with me. I just don’t get him. It was nice to see him get to beat the shit out the Vince for the Montréal screw job. I thought it was nice to have the Hart family help out to cover for Bret not really being able to go anymore due to the stroke he has had. I hope the Hart family members currently employed by WWE took as many shots as they could against Vince since I hear they are on schedule to be wished well in future endeavors (or fired soon).

Finally we get to a decent match as Jericho and Edge square off using the real life injury of Edge and Jericho comments deriding Edge while he was laid up as fuel. I really thought Edge would get the win here but it seems this feud is just warming up here. I expect a rematch at Extreme rules the next pay per view to continue this battle. This was a solid main event match. No complaints here other than I didn’t like the outcome. I’m sure Edge will get his “SPEAR” on Jericho soon enough. I don’t watch Smackdown but have enjoyed the video highlights on RAW. Both Jericho and Edge can work the mic so plenty of good feud left here.

Next is the10-diva tag match with Vickie Guerrero’s first Wrestlemania. Vicky stick to villainess bitch behind the scenes, you are better at that. Nice to see Eddie get a tribute frog splash from her, even if she didn’t quite pull it off. Also nice to see Mickey James out there so soon after since her health scare. She nearly lost her leg due to a staff infection and I was told there was no way she would be at Mania. She’s a trooper and gutted though to pull the couple of the stunts she was asked to do. Good for you, Mickie Worst thing about this match other than the talent level of some of the performers was Michelle McCool and Mayse are the same character on different shows. They need to fix that it’s boring. McCool is dating l is dating Undetaker so she’s not going anywhere. Mayse is the least talented diva to ever hold a title, well Stephanie McMahon had the title for a cup off coffee but I bet she could still kick Mayse’s ass.

Batista vs. Cena. Was there any doubt Cena would win? After all he is the guy who the deck is always stacked against yet always pulls out a win against insurmountable odds. So that’s what happens. Which is why so many people hate Cena as much as they are those who love him. I like Cena, he is a throwback to the Rock Stone Cold era where good mic work ruled but I get tired of him as champion. I was surprised when they let paper tiger Shamus beat him, but order has been restored Cena lovers and little kids are happy and Cena haters are happy since they get to hate on him some more. Decent match but the outcome was never in doubt in my mind.

Undertaker vs. Michaels (the streak vs. the career). This of course tore the roof off the place and why it was last. I rank their match last year only a bit higher because I had some doubt that they make not keep the streak intact. Shawn Michael is Mr. Wrestlemania and was a creditable, believable threat to the streak. I thought he might actually win last year. I knew going in that Michaels had decided to call it quits this year and retire so the outcome was never in doubt but damn it these two didn’t sell the match. It was a great one and the only one that will be remembered from this snore fest in the coming years. I didn’t get a chance to see Michaels in his prime since I was WCW fan but I’ve really come to love him since they folded. He is the showstopper. His match with Kurt Angle really sold me on him and I looked forward to his Mania match every year. The match with Flair was great for sentimental reason and these two with Undertaker are the best I’ve ever seen so he goes out on top. I hate to see him leave especially on a loss because he’s got plenty of gas left in the tank but better this than Flair who is hanging on by personality down in TNA. You can stay too long. Shawn picked his spot to leave and I can’t imagine a better match to do it on. Of course, it would have been cool to see him break the streak and go out. But we all know that is not going to happen. Who is left for Undertaker to get to 20-0 and then call it quits? I can think of only two people and one of them is not going to happen now (Hulk Hogan). I would guess Cena would be his next victim. Insurmountable odds don’t you know?

So a very forgettable Wrestlemania outside one match, can I get a refund? Didn’t think so. Please do better next year Vince.
