Cry For Justice 6 review and SPOILERS!

Wow, quite a one two punch that came in this week for this Justice League fan. Cry for Justice 6 finally arrived and the villain stands revealed, and what a villain. Writer James Robinson has certainly taken Prometheus to the next level. While this issue took forever to get here, it was certainly worth the wait. If you thought Deathstroke dismantling of the Satellite Era League in Identity crisis was impressive, Prometheus goes on a run this issue that equals that feat and maybe tops it. He’s right up there now with Despero, Doctor Light, T.O. Morrow, Crime Syndicate of Earth 3 and Felix Faust. Death, destruction of cities and mayhem, all of that and finally a post Blackest Night issue of Justice League number 41. A good week to be a Justice League fan.

If you have been wondering way I haven’t talked about Cry for Justice here on Analog, it is because we were so far into the story it would have taking a lot to recap. I just can’t be brief in reviewing for some reason. So I held off thinking I would write a piece on the mini series when it was over but this issue was too good not to talk about a little. I still plan on final piece on this series and how it is defiantly changing the title but that will have to wait. The Metzler era is over and with this issue of JLA 41, James Robinson’s team finally starts to come together. I’ll discuss that in my next review of that issue but back to CFJ 6.

We’ve know that Prometheus has been our big bad for quite some time but our heroes have been chasing their tail trying to find him and we now know why. As teased last issue end panel, it does involve Freddie Freeman the current Captain Marvel. We pick up this issue with “Freddie” facing off with Supergirl. He wants to know how Supergirl figured things out. She explains that the magical lightning bolt that “Freddie” used shield them from the explosion that should killed them all was her first tip something was wrong. Magic and the Superman family don’t get along, it should have been like Kryptonite to her but she felt nothing. “Freddie” also slipped up by saying “Shazam” to activate his powers instead of “Captain Marvel” like he is supposed to do. Supergirl was the only one who caught this but wasn’t sure since the new Captain Marvel has been though so many changes lately but she now knows what’s up. Freddie compliments her on being the only one smart enough to catch on, and then shuts off his suit to reveal he is actually Prometheus. This is definitely an “OMG!” moment.

Our villain has been right in front of us all along and no wonder the heroes could not find him. No mind control here just a very clever disguise that took advantage of our heroes trust. Prometheus then goes on a rampage like I’ve never seen. To describe it all would take hours and you just have to see it, let’s just say if there is a way to neutralize a hero, Prometheus has thought of it from the Atom to Zatanna. They all fall to him. Luckily he still has one weakness; he still hasn’t cataloged villains in his massive database in his suit. Didn’t learn anything from that Catwoman encounter I guess. Shade arrives with Jay Garrick to slow him down just enough for Donna Troy to beat the holy hell out of him. I’ve considered the affable Ms. Troy a lightweight in the past. Sure she was the mother hen of the Teen Titans and I liked her in that role, but ass kicker? Not so much, but she sure channel every part of her sister Wonder Woman to save the day. Perhaps I need to reconsider Ms Troy; she is sort of a version of Wonder Woman in continuity now.

The captured villain doesn’t seem too worried and give an Osymadius type rundown of his plan and why he needed to disguise himself to get access to the JLA satellite. He’s used the assembled pieces he has stolen to build a device to teleport the heroes cities though time and space so they can never find them, Death they could get over but lost forever in a limitless list of locations in time and space, that would be a crippling blow, and the perfect revenge for them thwarting him in the past. Prometheus is telling them this for a reason because it is too late to stop it. He will exchange where the teleportation devices are in each city for his freedom. This is all Green Arrow can stand still grieving from Roy’s maiming last issue and he mouths off as usual and calls the villains bluff. Thanks Ollie, you just gave him his first target as we watch Star City begin to be destroyed. Yikes, and to be continued next issue.

While many have complained about this series being slow or that it was unnecessarily bloody with Roy losing his arm last issue, I feel that Robinson has raised the stakes and the threat level to epic proportions this issue. Prometheus has now gone to the front of the bad guy class and looks to be one of the League most dangerous opponents in years. One league era (Meltzer’s) is coming to and end before it really got going but another one (Robinson’s) is forming as we see in JLA 41. I’ll discuss that in the next post but it appears that the new larger League is going to have its hands full. I may not like all the choices for members (Mon-El in particular and there are too many Titans) but I like that my favorite team is finally taking center stage in the DCU where they belong.
